Male nude sculpture - Sam

For this piece I chose to work in a black clay which I'd never used before - whilst wet it is a rich purple brown shade. I only had two weeks working from the model so used photos to finish the hands and feet, I think this shows sadly as they're not very good!


Sam's head was too wide so I cut off the face and removed a section, then reattached. 


Then I hollowed out the piece, creating a channel for hot air in the kiln to rise up. 


His right hand broke off in the kiln, because it was a weak point on its own, supporting the rest of the figure.

I applied three coats of linseed oil to darken the fired piece, and temper some of the dryness. 


UPDATE: He looks better without his head.
