Mental Health and Justice Commission: Red Cluster

Early on during this commission I experimented with different fabric forms, one of these was clusters of gathered shapes. I poured concrete and plaster over them and dipped them in wax, to transform them from soft fabric to solid objects.

Continuing with the same gathered forms, I increased the scale slightly and made Red Cluster, which is now hanging in Bethlem Gallery Studio. My plan is to greatly increase the scale and make a large draping piece with the same process. I am aiming for several metres, but I may need to adapt this according to the exhibition space.

My thinking for this piece has been shaped by looking at the large scale work of textile artists Sheila Hicks and Magdalena Abakanowicz.
